Malawi Table
Making and weaving Malawi Chairs/Tables is a long labour intensive process which takes months of planning.
The Tiliaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the chairs. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried.
In the winter months there is no material available to weave these chairs, therefore weaving is limited to about 8 months of the year.
Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.
These chairs are extremely hard wearing and strong. The natural chairs can get damp– but drying quickly is essential, as it is an organic product and must not stay damp for long periods, as mould can settle.
*** CHAIRS ARE ALL UNIQUE ONE OFF PIECES. THEY CAN DIFFER QUITE SUBSTANTIALLY FROM ONE ANOTHER AS THEY ARE ALL HAND WOVEN IN MANY DIFFERENT VILLAGES IN MALAWI.
WE TRY AND MATCH CHAIRS AS BEST AS WE CAN, WHEN SENDING OUT MORE THAN A SINGLE CHAIR. IF A SINGLE CHAIR HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MATCH IT TO ANOTHER WITHOUT THE FIRST CHAIR BEING PRESENT. PLEASE TAKE ALL THESE FACTORS INTO ACCOUNT PRIOR TO PURCHASING OR SEND AN EMAIL WITH ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
